Racing Without the Numbers: Brad Howard's European Championship Experience
Trailberg partner athlete Brad Howard took on the European Middle Distance Triathlon Championships with a different mindset.
Rather than chasing heart rate zones, power targets or pace splits, Brad stripped everything back. No heart rate monitor. No bike computer. Just trusting months of training and racing by feel.
As athletes, it's easy to become obsessed with the data. Metrics have their place, but sometimes they stop guiding us and start controlling us. Brad's race was a reminder that performance isn't just about numbers - it's also about confidence, preparation and enjoying the sport.

Brad Howard's Race Breakdown
Swim
The race began with a non-wetsuit swim, completed in approximately 42 minutes.
"I stayed relaxed and came out feeling fresh. Right where I'd expect to be."
Starting controlled rather than chasing positions meant conserving energy for the long day ahead.
Bike
The bike course featured two demanding laps with around 1,000 metres of climbing, finished in 2 hours 48 minutes.
Without constantly checking power or heart rate, Brad focused on riding instinctively.
"Instead of thinking about power or heart rate, I stayed present, trusted the work and just kept turning the pedals."
Run
Due to high temperatures, the run course was shortened to 14km, completed in 1 hour 8 minutes.
Rather than worrying about pace, Brad settled into a comfortable rhythm and simply enjoyed racing.

Brad's Biggest Takeaway
Reflecting on the race, Brad said:
"This weekend reminded me what racing is all about. Being out there reminded me why I fell in love with this sport in the first place.
Somewhere along the way, I think a lot of us become so focused on pace, heart rate and power that we forget why we started. Data has its place, but sometimes those numbers start controlling us instead of guiding us.
This race was different. No heart rate monitor. No bike Garmin. No chasing numbers. Just trusting my body, trusting the work I'd already put in, and enjoying racing again.
It ended up being one of the most enjoyable races I've had in a long time.
An incredible weekend, and a reminder that sometimes the best thing you can do isn't chase another number - it's remember why you started."

What to Wear for Triathlon Training
Training for a triathlon means spending hours outdoors in changing conditions, making your clothing just as important as your training plan.
Whether you're heading out for an endurance ride, a long run or an early morning brick session, versatile technical layers help you stay comfortable from start to finish.
Trailberg's performance apparel is designed for athletes who train in all conditions, with lightweight, breathable fabrics that regulate temperature while allowing unrestricted movement. Our materials help keep you dry through high-intensity sessions, while stretch fabrics move naturally with your body whether you're climbing hills on the bike or pushing through the final kilometres of a run.
For cooler mornings or unpredictable weather, lightweight outer layers provide protection without adding unnecessary bulk, making them easy to wear before, during or after training.
Brad's Trailberg Kit Picks
As a Trailberg athlete, Brad relies on performance clothing that can handle long training blocks without compromising comfort.
His essentials include:
- Lightweight technical T-shirts for everyday training
- Breathable shorts designed for unrestricted movement
- Outer layers for cooler starts and recovery
The right kit won't replace consistent training - but it can help you stay comfortable enough to focus on what matters most.

Trust Your Training
Brad's performance at the European Middle Distance Triathlon Championships wasn't built on checking numbers every few seconds - it was built on months of consistent work.
Sometimes the biggest performance gains come from stepping away from the data, trusting your preparation and remembering why you started in the first place.
Whether you're training for your first triathlon, chasing a new personal best or simply enjoying getting outside, the right mindset and the right kit can make every session more enjoyable.
